Two Women Jump From the Fourth Floor To Escape Blaze In Dwarka, Delhi

 

A woman who is 83 years old was died and her granddaughter was injured when they jumped from the fourth floor of their apartment in Dwarka on Wednesday in an attempt to save themselves from a fire. Other residents tried to help the both by cushioning their fall with mattresses but the octogenarian did not survive the jump.


The Pacific Apartments in Dwarka,Delhi had fire safety equipment but it was not functional and its fire safety certificate had expired. Fire officers said the possible reasons for the fire were a short circuit in the AC compressor, a similar problem with the refrigerator or a gas leak.
The petient, Jasuri Devi, lived on the fourth floor with granddaughter Pooja Pant, 30, who was under medical treatment. The Delhi Fire Service was alerted to the blaze at 12.22pm on Wednesday and six fire tenders rushed to the spot with 40 firemen. "We were informed that the fire was on the fourth floor. the time we reached the building, we learnt that two women had jumped down and police had taken them to the hospital," a fire officer said.
The building has stilt parking plus six floors, with seven apartments on each floor. The residents heard a commotion and found flames erupting from the apartment and spreading to the fifth floor, forcing people living there to hurriedly reach for safety.


A resident of the apartment told that a sweeper, there to collect garbage, noticed dark smoke emerging from the gap under the door. He alerted people and, in an attempt to save the family inside, the neighbours tried to break open the door using the fire equipment but they were unable to gain entry. "At the time of the incident, only the woman and her granddaughter were inside. Jasuri Devi's son had gone out and only returned when we were trying to break down the door," a neighbour said. "The two women had rushed to the balcony, hoping to escape the fire."
